The District Museum of Dibrugarh was established in the year 1987, which is strategically located from the point of view of cultural diffusion. The adjoining region of this area of eastern Assam may be termed as a melting pot where at least three different strand of culture, namely, Indo-Aryan, Tibeto-Barman and Tai culture are mingled. Hence, the said museum has the great responsibility to record and preserve the cultural artifacts belonging to these groups. Therefore a permanent museum building with modern facilities for collection, conservation, research of the artifacts is very essential. Thus, the construction of a museum building was taken up. A budget of Rs 343.41 lakhs had been approved for the project. About 70% of the civil works of the proposed building has been completed.
